Exceptional Equitation was established in June 1978 to meet the recreational and therapeutic needs of children through the use of horses and riding. It is the first program in Kentucky to be accredited by the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA). NARHA is a non-profit program whose purpose is to promote the rehabilitation of individuals with physical, emotional and learning disabilities through equine-facilitated activities. For more information visit their website at: http://www.narha.org/

Exceptional Equitation started with one horse, three riders and two volunteers. There are now eight horses, three ponies, two burros and an assortment of other farm animals such as chickens, ducks, geese, sheep and two pot-bellied pigs. Living on the farm are also three friendly dogs and many cats! These farm animals provide participants an opportunity for more animal interaction and building that special relationship between a child and an animal. Since the program's inception more than seven hundred children have participated in equine related activities at Exceptional Equitation.

Future plans include the construction of an enclosed riding area as sufficient funds become available. This will enable the program to operate during inclement weather.
