Volunteers are an essential part of the Exceptional Equitation program. Its success depends a great deal upon their generous assistance. During their period of service, in addition to learning how to care for and groom horses, inexperienced volunteers develop an understanding of basic horsemanship skills, stable management and farm maintenance requirements.

Under the supervision and guidance of qualified instructors, volunteers assist with grooming and preparing the horses for lessons. Also, they may be assigned as a leader (leading the horse) or sidewalker (walking next to the horse and rider) during the lesson. In addition they help with stable management tasks, help with special events and visits by local school classes or other private agencies.

Persons volunteering are asked to commit to once a week, for approximately four hours during the session. They must be at least 16 years old. Orientation and training sessions for new volunteers are conducted at the beginning of each session and periodically as needed.
